FEEDBACK, NEWS & VIEWS, LATEST ADDITIONS.... interpreting history today..... communicating history....history forum to discuss (argue) and debate..... updated each day with TLC.

FROM CAROL IN CRETE...."Hi, Valerie....Findon Newshound....

I was just browsing through the web page (as I do every day), and was reading about the Findon Newshound. Did you know that Bert Jordan had died recently?

Another name to jog my memory was Sue Elliott, do you or anyone ever hear from her and John now?

Bitterly cold here, haven't ventured out of the front door for two days now, but hopefully the temperature is going to rise tomorrow with a change in wind direction, most welcome, believe me!   Carol".

Yes, I did hear about poor Bert Jordan.... a very nice guy.

No, I do not know anything about Sue Elliott and John.   Perhaps someone will tell us.

I can't believe it is so cold in Crete.    Just an iced bird bath and a smattering of frost on the lawn in Findon..... otherwise outings are as usual.

FROM ANDREW....  "Chanctonbury and Cissbury Video....Hi Valerie,

Here's an interesting video about some of the archeological aspects of Chanctonbury Ring and Cissbury Ring:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ah1hwxc6XA

It includes a short interview with Harry Goring, the great great grandson of Charles Goring of beech tree fame.

Hey! There's the painting of the Cissbury sheep I did at the end of your feedback page!  Andrew".

Ha ha! I wondered how long it would take you to recognise those sheep. Actually this week some sheep have appeared in exactly the same field as in your painting. Which made me think of you and so came home and took the photograph.

ANDREW'S VIDEO LINK..... from Penny...."Dear Valerie, I really liked viewing the C&C video...it made me quite 'Homesick"for Sussex.P."

STEYNING GRAMMAR...... I know that many of you will be proud to own up to being pupils at the nearby Steyning Grammar School in the past.

Here are some pictures through the ages.....in chronological order.... starting in 1614 when the school was founded..

The cheery Steyning Grammar School football team of just over a hundred years ago..... in fact for the season 1906/7.

Here are the merry band of Steyning Grammar School cricketers... date unsure.... perhaps you recognise yourself and can tell me.

This is the austere Chatfield's class room in the 1930s.   I cannot quite read what is written on the blackboard in those days.

The new swimming pool in 1980.

First year students for the school year 1980/81, Form 1A5

The pupils were divided into "houses".    Here are the House Captains for the school year 1980/81.

FROM SUE CRAMMAN...."I recently came across your site and found it very interesting.

My mum came from Worthing, met my dad at the end of the war and moved north.

For many, many years my annual holidays were spent in Worthing. We were a family that enjoyed country walking and spent many an hour on Cissbury and Chanctonbury, having many photographs dating back to the sixties.

My Grandfathers neice and family lived in Findon and went on to buy NorthEnd House. I can remember viewing it before they renovated. My Grandad worked for their family and I have always been led to believe he carved the black horse outside the public house.

I have recently retired and am attempting some family trees.

My Grandmother,as a child, lived 4,Mill cottages, Findon (1901 census).

On reading your article about the windmills, I wondered if these cottages were close to one of the mills.
Sue Cramman"

The disappearance of the carved "Black Horse" has always been one of Findon's mysteries, Sue......since it was taken down and whisked away.   Pam Stepney of Findon has already mentioned this on this website.

FROM CAROL IN CRETE.....  "Good evening, Valerie.

Yet another wet and windy day today, but there was the odd few minutes of sunshine, and I managed to capture this double rainbow from my bedroom balcony. I thought it rather an odd sky, too, with the dark blue above the rainbow and much lighter beneath.  Carol".

ANDREW'S VIDEO LINK...."Dear Valerie

I also agree with Penny. That was a nice little film, well put together. (And the Guy drives a Land Rover!)

Certainly the views are a great deal better than the Ikea chimneys along the Purley Way where I live!

I have visited Chanctonbury & Cissbury, but a great deal earlier than the storm of 87.   Tony"

FINDON TEST QUESTION FOR TODAY (Friday)....

Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint.

Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement.

The FIRST patient is examined within the hour and is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week.

The SECOND sees his family doctor after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment, then waits 8 weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray,

Which isn't reviewed for another week and finally has his surgery scheduled for 6 months from then.

Why the different treatment for the two patients?

FROM ANN HYDE on Findon..."Hello Valerie

I thought you might like to know that I have, today 3rd Feb, added a little piece about Findon to my blog.

http://studiohyde.blogspot.com/

I came across a very small Souvenir book and thought it would make a nice bit of interest, especially as one of the pictures has a glimpse of my GGrandparents old home.

Meanwhile, I am still wading through photographs!  Regards, ann".

JOHN GREVES ON THE TRACK OF MILL COTTAGES...."Valerie .... Mill Cottages...Roughly 400 yds west of the Mill house (which is now very much a "Des Res").

In ruins 60 years ago with 5 very deep wells .... clump of trees probably marks the spot .... mind your step ....!   John"

I don't think any clump marks the spot, John...... the properties were long gone and the field ploughed up when I arrived here 19 years ago.  Only some nice looking cows in the field these days.     A Time Team dig could be in order, wot?

See my narrative entitled Memorable Mill Cottage Occupants
