THIS IS FINDON VILLAGE ― These Findon Chronicles are created by Valerie Martin and are progressively growing to be the only record of life around Findon, West Sussex, England.  Everyday stories about real people..... in fact, a potted history of the village.  The topics today, are the history of tomorrow.

THE HARTRIDGE YEARS

Copyright Valerie Martin

Charles Eric Hartridge came from the States but the date is uncertain but I know he was the owner of Findon Place certainly by 1932.

In October 2011 I heard from Edd Summers saying....

...
"Good morning....my name is Edd Summers, I live in Germany, (although I grew up in Hitchin Herts.)

I see that you have a very interesting, and may I say, very well laid out history of Findon.

I own a 1927 Rolls Royce Phantom 1, (See photo attached). This car was first owned by a C. Hartridge Esq. of Findon Place.

I am trying to find out a little more about the history of the car in general and this Mr. Hartridge in particular, can you help?

I can see from the Rolls Royce records that Mr. Hartridge took delivery of the car on the 30th May 1927 at a cost of £2460.- and that it was sold in July 1931 to a Mr. McCandlish of St. James Place SW1 for just £600.- (One can only assume that Mr. Hartridge fell on hard times during the financial crisis of the period).

I look forward to hearing from you.    Yours sincerely,
Edd Summers".

I told Edd that he had an absolutely super model of Rolls.   I could just imagine it gliding into the driveway at the Manor of Findon.

I have been able to trace much of interest connected to the name of Hartridge during their tenure in Findon.

Here is the Findon landowner, Hugh Richard Penfold Wyatt outside St. John the Baptist Church with his daughter, Joan on 20th July 1927.

The above marriage was between Mr. Peter T. Chevallier and Miss Joan Wyatt, children of esteemed families.   In the photograph the wedding car had just arrived at the church where a crowd of guests, tenants and Findonians had been dutifully standing and waiting.   The bride is seen wearing a train of antique Brussels lace, bridal veil and flower head dress as she walked towards the lychgate.   The bridesmaids holding baskets decorated with flowers and pageboys were nudged forward and followed the bride under the archway.

After the ceremony the car left the church where several others were parked.   The happy couple, Peter T. Chevallier (son of Captain Barrington H. Chevallier and Mrs Chevallier of Great Bearings in Suffolk)..... and Peter's bride, Joan, waved from the car as it passed Charles Eric Hartridge of Findon Place with his cine camera (rather a novelty in those days of the 1920s).    I would add that he was a member of the esteemed Institute of Incorporated Amateur Cinematographers.
