THIS IS FINDON VILLAGE ― These Findon Chronicles are created by Valerie Martin and are progressively growing to be the only record of life around Findon, West Sussex, England.  Everyday stories about real people..... in fact, a potted history of the village.  The topics today, are the history of tomorrow.

THE FINDON WINDMILL by Vivian Rolt — (1874-1933)

Copyright Valerie Martin 2011

Ferreting around for a portrayal of the Findon Windmill has been a soul searching and seemingly impossible task until I came across the local Storrington landscape artist, Vivian Rolt.     He actually signed the above watercolour of the windmill and stooks of corn, "Vivian Rolt —  Findon".

Here is another somewhat similar view of the Findon Windmill on the Downs, West Sussex by Vivian Rolt.  (Looking south towards the sea on the skyline ... and Bost Hill wending its way in the middle distance).   Perhaps both give portrayals of the same individuals in the landscape?

These watercolours give us a first hand idea of the old windmill in those days and it appears that he frequented the Findon downland.

Vivian was a student at The Slade and exhibited at the Royal Academy.    He had built a beautiful house with fine views of the downland and excellent light provided by a tall ground-to-roof window in the nearby village of Storrington.   This was named The Studio.    Vivian left The Studio at the outbreak of the First World War and I have lost track of his movements since those days.

Continue if you would like to read about the Cissbury Windmill (otherwise known as Offington Windmill, Ballard's Mill and Broadwater Windmill).
