In February 2006, Tommy Winters (who had worked for Josh Gifford) got his rewards. Tommy had been a familiar sight in Nepcote and lived a few doors from me and first worked as an apprentice jockey at the age of 14 and retired from the saddle to be travelling Head Lad to Josh.
He was 77 years old when presented with a racing painting and bottle of wine when a race at Lingfield Park was named after him.
The race will be known as the Tom Winters Lifetime in Racing Apprentice Handicap Stakes and will be run at Lingfield Park.
The event was organized by Racing Welfare. This is a charity that provides assistance to anyone working, or who has been employed, in horseracing and who may be in need (through accident, illness, age or misfortune). Tommy is seen here with members of his family and those from the Parkinson's Disease Society.
