THE MICHELGROVE MYSTERY OF AUGUST 1911
Copyright Valerie Martin 2011
Below is the scene outside the Michelgrove Stables around 1907 showing industrious stable lads attending to their charges ...
At the beginning of April 2011 I received the following photograph from Rendell Williams presenting me with a mystery....
"Dear Valerie...... Sorry to trouble you. I recently bought the postcard shown in the attachment, which depicts a bookie (a most unusual subject for a card) at "Michel Grove Sports, August 1911".
I assume the Sports were not held at the ruins of Michel Grove House and the racing stables - such an isolated spot!
Were they held at Findon?
The card was produced by
Edward Bex (Edwards) of Worthing.
Looking forward to your reply,
Many thanks,
Rendel Williams".
I have not previously come across a
photograph such as this. I just love the punters and the
bookies.
A hundred years ago, there were still racing stables at Michelgrove in August
1911 and I can only guess that perhaps some sort of sports were held involving
horses and betting in 1911.
There is a bit of a puzzle with the bare legs and white shoes .... hardly riding gear.
