ATTACKED ON NEPCOTE GREEN?

Copyright Valerie Martin 2010

I met a metal detectorist soon after I had moved to Findon and he told me of a discovery on Nepcote Green in the 1990s.

His hobby had brought to light a sixteenth century horseshoe buried on Nepcote Green, (in the N.E. corner). Close by he also unearthed the bronze chape from a sword, with pieces of leather still attached. This was also later verified as belonging to the sixteenth century.

A horseman can be imagined in the time of Queen Elizabeth I as he galloped into Findon from the east with a message from the Queen.   His horse lost a shoe; he was attacked by assailants unknown, and drew his sword. The rest is history.
