THE MYSTERY OF THE HUT

Copyright Valerie Martin 2009

In February 2009 I came across the above little sketch of a Findon property..... but I wondered which house it was?

The picture was entitled "The Hut, Findon, 17th April 1906" and so depicted a property in the village as it looked a hundred years ago.

Another puzzle to unravel I thought to myself.    I pondered this overnight and came up with the conclusion that "The Hut" is, in fact, the present house named "Ring House" in Nepcote Lane.... on the way to Cissbury Ring.    This has been very much extended by successive owners over the past century ..........and at the latter end of 2008 the present owners put in a Planning Application for a Wildlife Pond in an adjacent field that had been turned down by the Arun District Council.

The chimney shown in the earlier 1906 sketch is the smaller of the two chimneys in my present day photograph..... and the view is from a slightly different angle.

The mystery remains..... why was it called "The Hut".     Strange name.

Here is a small portion of the 1909 Ordnance Survey Map of the location of "The Hut" (re-named "Carna" by 1942 and now known as  "Ring House")...... showing the small shape of the property and the veranda-thingy around it.
