THE SKEETER AND THE SCOUT
Copyright Valerie Martin 2008
On 2nd September 1995 an army Skeeter helicopter (of around vintage 1958)..... (that's the one on the right in my original shot) takes an emergency landing in the Wyatt Field in Findon. This happened whilst en route from Middle Wallop in Birmingham to Shoreham Airport.
A Scout helicopter (built 1962)...with pilot Paul Spragg, landed and came to its aid.
In the original photograph, the local girls (the late Betty Ockenden of Nepcote..... and also Pam Ockenden who lives in Findon... plus Yours Truly on the right .....rushed out to find out what was going on. Later we were joined by some young lads.......
Unable to repair the poor Skeeter, both crews took off in the Scout over the Findon countryside and continue to Shoreham.
The unfortunate forlorn Skeeter had the indignity of being towed away the following day (Sunday) by Ian Ticehurst of Threshers in Nepcote...and his tractor.
I ask myself..... why does nothing exciting happen like that these days.
