JOHN CONSTABLE'S FINDON COTTAGE

Copyright Valerie Martin 2008

This looks like a breezy corner of the village to me.   Depicted above is a cottage ... it is described as A cottage by a wood in Findon, Sussex c, 1834...... a watercolour by John Constable  (1776-1837).

I am wondering which cottage.... and whereabouts was it in the village?

What was Constable doing in Findon.... and did he personally know the occupants, or just happened to be passing by?

It was a long time ago so have you any ideas on how to unravel this puzzle?

Penny Smith-Berkeley in Ontario emailed in October 2008 "Dear Valerie, Well you go from strength to strength.

Then to find out that there was a painting by John Constable of a tiny part of Findon.  I wonder if you will trace that cottage, it is from such a long time ago...maybe the chimneys might give a clue?

I did a little investigation and find that there are several Constable paintings of Sussex, mainly of Brighton and environs.I shall study some more!   Fascinating. Thanks.  Penny"

This artist painted a harbour view of Littlehampton.... and also Petworth House from the park.     The Arundel Mill was his last work.     Other paintings inspired by local scenes include Cowdray, Houghton... and an evening scene looking westwards over nearby Shoreham.    He appears to have much frequented our corner of the world.
