CISSBURY ADDERS IN 2008 - totals never to be repeated

Copyright Valerie Martin 2008

Adders are not my favourite creatures..... they are best left to their own devices.    My worst fear is that one of my Shetland Sheepdogs will accidentally tread on one or momentarily pause (not paws) to sniff one out.....and it will strike in defence.

Bingo!   I discovered the best haul of seven reptiles all in one place at the same time one morning in the spring of 2008.

Eat your heart out Bill Oddie.

All within an spot approximately  5ft. x 2 ft.

Spot the snakes.....

One Slow Worm (top left of main photograph)

One Grass Snake...(top left)

About to strike, but don't worry.... no venom with this one.

Second Slow Worm and first Adder entwined......... that's another Adder on the right slithering  off.... making two Adders.  (In centre of main pic).

Here's the No. 2 Adder slithering off with a chum neatly curled up below him.... making a total of 3 Adders.

And yet another adder ... making a grand total of four Adders.    (Top centre).

Making an even grander total of seven reptiles all getting on well together within a small area of 5ft. x 2 ft.

A little later in the month I had the sighting of the largest adder yet.....!

About a couple of feet in length.....tenner for confirming this.

Fed up with being photographed..... she retreated.

A week later, I had a real scoop.... featuring The Kiss...

Mr Adder caught in the act..... kissing Mrs Slow Worm
