THE THIRD CHANCTONBURY DEW-POND

Copyright Valerie Martin 2008

During Easter 2008 I posed the following puzzle to my surfers....

The above photograph was taken before the Second World War and the title is "Dew-pond among the Trees on Chanctonbury Hill".    At the moment, I'm not sure which dew-pond this is.   Any ideas?

Also I wonder who the lady was?

Chanctonbury Ring from the Washington Road before the Second World War.

I did not have to wait long for some answers.....

From John Greves in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey...."Well - it bain't the first - nor the second - must be the third - someway down the hill to the noreast - 'bout where Chanct(o)nbury "o" is on Exp 121 map - got it Val?  Regards John".

John Stepney in Findon was a little more explicit... "V ...Not sure but think the dew pond pictured is the one that can be reached by taking Chanctonbury Lane from Wiston, parking in the car park at the end of lane. Walk up the well signed path to the ring and the dew pond can be seen on the left a little way up the track.

It is rather overgrown now and has no water in........JS"

That's a good description...... I can pin point the old dew-pond now.

From John Greves again...."Dear Valerie, Yes, looks like the same relic of a pond - problem is that the track up to the Ring is not marked on the map as a Public Footpath - Open Access non-existant - wonder why - bounders are at it again - Charles Goring must be turning in his grave.

There is that Yankee saying "the price of freedom is constant vigilance" - too many two legged sheep in that part of Sussex - except you of course Val. Regards John".

There certainly were many of dew-ponds around years ago.
