I COULD EAT A HORSE
Copyright Valerie Martin 2006
The original Black Horse of the 1800s was situated in the High Street and the name migrated a few yards southwards to a completely new building when the old inn was demolished with the construction of the Findon Bypass A24 in the 1930s. But I digress and my intention of writing this is review the evening menu on offer at the newly vamped establishment....

With the heat wave we had in July 2006, we were beginning to regret having made our booking at the Black Horse (now renamed the Mountain Range Restaurant) but a gentle breeze caressed our appetites on the night and we need not have worried. We had originally decided to try the Hot Rocks from the Andes menu and valiantly stuck to our guns even though the evening was a sticky one.
Hot Rocks are truly outstanding and in a league of their own and are not offered anywhere else in the village. A kind of indoor BBQ in front of you on the table. Great fun. There were a number of diners but I did notice that no one else was venturesome enough to order the Hot Rocks whilst I was there (or perhaps it was the heat wave that had put them off).
I must praise the best home made French fries I have ever tasted (I'm not joking). I might have licked the plate had I not remembered decorum. I would go back for the fries alone. I vote the Black Horse the best eatery experience in Findon at the moment because of the Hot Rocks.

I haven't mentioned the fare I enjoyed at the Black Horse — and all good reviewers in the newspapers mention what they have eaten so here goes.....
Starter: Baby back ribs.
Honey mustard. My verdict: delicious.
Main Course: Hot Rocks. 8 oz. beef fillet. Home
made fries and steamed vegetables. My verdict: delicious.
Dessert: Vanilla Panna Cotta Summer Fruits. My verdict: delicious.

THE BLACK HORSE, HIGH STREET, FINDON It was with some trepidation that I visited the new-look Black Horse after hearing that it now boasted a theme based on mountain ranges. It seemed like a fish out of water concept for a village which is steeped in horse racing rather than rock climbing history. Indeed, I can recall jockey Bob Champion on Grand National winner Aldaniti, trotting up to the front entrance of the hostelry many moons ago. Stepping inside the revamped Black Horse, I was immediately struck by the fact that it bore very little resemblance to the somewhat tired pub of old. The interior was now open-plan, the decor sharp and clean, and the atmosphere oozed sophistication. We were served by a Scottish chap whose charming, unhurried approach set the tone for a very pleasant evening. He even produced a colouring set for my daughter, who by way of thanks presented her pictures to him and other members of the staff. My partner had a barbecued chicken pizza which she deemed superb, while the cheesy pasta served to my daughter was exemplary in terms of both quality and quantity. I couldn't resist "hot rocks", basically a superheated slab of granite on which I cooked raw beef, lamb and duck to accompany a side order of homemade chips and fresh vegetables. Although the theme will continue to stir debate, I would thoroughly recommend a visit to the Black Horse, which, I suspect, will soon be heaving with satisfied customers.
