TOBOGGANING ON CHURCH HILL

Copyright Valerie Martin 2006

This is how I came to hear about tobogganing over one hundred years ago on Church Hill above Findon.

The story starts with an email from Mike Cooksey describing how his family met their friends met in The Square in the village and set off to Church Hill for the day's fun.   I do not know the exact date but it looks like summer from the photographs.

Dear Valerie

Old Photographs

I am a complete family history freak, and when I was offered all the "old photographs" from the attic of a recently departed cousin, I jumped at the chance.

Today I have been totally transfixed by the wealth of history that was in the black polythene bag I picked up yesterday. Amongst them was this one taken in the square.

Wintons in 1901 — Cissie, Ruth, "Patch" , Phyllis, Winnie, Enid, Sissie Jack and Eric Terranean, Edna Wilks and Dorothy Terranean.

The five on the left are all my Aunts!  If only I had had this picture to throw at them when they would "shoo" us kids away when we sat on the wall!   Just in case Peter in NZ picks up on this one .... his mother is holding the dog!  The six on the right are not our family.

Date?............. If Cissie sitting on the gatepost is six, it will be 1901.

I see that the Post Office was highly sophisticated with a Telegraph Office.

Other pictures in the same envelope include the party on their way to Church Hill and tobogganing down Church Hill on pieces of oil cloth !

I shall be months going through this lot and will pass on any more that might be of interest

Every good wish ........... Mike.

I immediately wrote back to Mike and begged him to send me the Church Hill photographs too.    They duly arrived.....

V - I've done my best, but they're not easy!   Best if I tell you what's written on the backs!  You can then do the sorting out and decide what's useful.

Now you know as much as I!   Who the Terranians were, I have no idea. They may even have been visitors from another planet!!!  I leave you to do what you will with the info .....

Mike.
