WHO LOST THEIR FLEUR-DE-LYS IN FINDON?

Millions of feet have walked this way before us. Who was careless enough to lose their dress fitting in Findon in the 1500s? The idea conjures up all kinds of possibilities.

I have learned that the above 16th century medieval double-sided dress fitting made of silver was unearthed in one of our fields in Findon on 18th September. It was later declared as "treasure" at an inquest as it fell within the criteria defined within the Treasure Act 1996 by virtue of its date and composition.

The object was of a fleur-de-lys design and was discovered by a metal detectorist from Cowfold who was working with members of the Sussex Historical Search Society. The item was subsequently examined and identified by the curator of the Renaissance collection at the British Museum and valued by a valuation panel.

The next question to be solved involved guessing which field threw up the treasure. Where were metal detectorists working in September? I soon found out....

Fleur-de-lys

Most years when the crop in that field has been harvested members of the Sussex Historical Search soc. have a one day search in that field-makes sense as its near the church and always being ploughed.

The site is very near ye olde village of Findon before it migrated to its present location. I wonder how she/he lost their fleur-de-lys. Any bright ideas?
