FINDON IN '67

Copyright Valerie Martin 2005

1967 in Findon could have been an inauspicious twelve months if it had not been for the trainer Captain Ryan Price and the doping incident with his horse, Hill House.   This was followed by the foot-and-mouth epidemic that hit the stable.   Only a few other events made it different from any other year.

What else hit the headlines in Findon in 1967 then, the year that Hill House came to the forefront of the news?

Another topic raising a few eyebrows concerned St. John the Baptist Church.  This was when a Faculty was granted to remove the curb stones from graves in the closed churchyard.

Mr. R. K. Middlemas also arrived in Findon in 1967 and purchased the Manor of Findon with about 25 acres.  He made an impact by removing various additions to the property that had been made to the east side soon after the death of a previous owner, Mrs Mary Richards.  Mr Middlemass restored the interior of the building to its 18th century magnificence.   He also planted young trees (now matured) in the gaps of the avenue of limes along the north side of the approach road to Findon Place.

It was also the year that the Convent of the Holy Rood in Nepcote Lane moved to St. Margaret’s at Lindfield.   The convent building was sold to the Convent of Our Lady of Sion (another devout community bound by vows to a religious life).   Under their care the extensive grounds in Nepcote were a feature and the trees and shrubs planted in earlier years became a retreat for wildlife in the developing village.

Another noteworthy occurrence in 1967 was His Grace the Duke of Norfolk's opening ceremony of the Cricket Club Pavilion extension (he had already opened the original building in 1950).

Captain Ryan Price also came into the news again when he was made Vice President of Findon Cricket Club.
