An intriguing Victorian painting/etching by Alexander Ansted and Arthur G. Coombe and showing the view from the west across the Parham Estate (in middle distance) to Chanctonbury Ring from Bignor Park.   The date is 1893.

Chanctonbury Ring from the west.... by GERALD ACKERMANN
(1876-1960)

 

Chanctonbury Ring from Lower Chancton Farm by Elliot H. Marten (exhibited from 1886-1901).  The artist was born in Hawick, Scotland and exhibited at the Royal Academy).   He eventually emigrated to Australia.

 

 I don't known who painted the picture..... not bad though......

Here is Chanctonbury Ring in the distance taken from Lower Chancton Farm..... the same place as the Alfred Robert Quinton painting above.  The same building on the right can just be seen in both pictures.   The date here is 1929.

 

Here's a combine harvester at Thakeham.... with Chanctonbury Ring in the background.    Date unsure.

Pre 1952 — Lower Chancton From from a field next to Pleasance Hill (or is it Pleasants Hill?) on the A283.  The field is called The Tump.   The cows look right in the photograph as post 1954 .....they would have been Friesians.
