CHANCTONBURY RING PORTFOLIO — FROM WISTON POND IN THE EAST

(In chronological order as near as I can get)

Copyright Valerie Martin 2004

Continuing with my collection of portrayals of Chanctonbury Ring, I must point out that this hill is some 700 feet above sea level and, until the hurricane, which swept across Sussex, was crowned with beech trees.  Excavations at the site have indicated that the ramparts date from 300 BC.

Remains of a number of buildings from  Roman times were unearthed during the early digs, along with various items and fragments of pottery.

Here's an old photograph of Chanctonbury Ring and Wiston House ... and here I quote.....taken from "the windmill at Steyning".

Not sure of the artist of this tiny one....

By Andrew John a Sussex artist.

Isn't this a lovely one.  It's a watercolour by David Holden who lives in Sussex and is well-known for his landscapes and townscapes.   He is the great nephew of Edith Holden, whose book "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" has been a world wide best seller and is famous for its illustrations.
