MY FIRST DAY IN FINDON
The year is 1935 and Nurse Joan Day takes us back along the road to her employment as District Nurse in the village all those years ago....
| I cannot remember what happened yesterday or the day before but well remember my first working day in Findon on 21st September 1935 (what a marvellous organ the brain is). I started out on my bike just before 9 a.m. for the Saturday visits. My first call was to young Michael Hogan who lived in Nepcote. He was very poorly with whooping cough I recorded his temperature and gave advice to his mother; then on my bike again to visit Mrs Lamsdale in Findon Valley. On again to visit the treasurer of the Findon Nursing Association to sign various forms. From there I came back to the main road to visit Mrs Dann who lived at the "Toll Cottage" at the bottom of Bost Hill — it has now been taken down, a great pity for on the outside wall were written the "toll payments". On again to Hook Lyn in Findon High Street to visit Mrs Davey who lived with the Churchills, I will tell you about this very interesting family another time. Time was getting on so I thought I had better look up the next maternity patient who was due for delivery in a fortnight. She lived in Stable Lane in an army hut at the back of Mr Sidney Thruscott's house. It was a large wooden hut divided into two dwellings, long since demolished. Home now for lunch and in the afternoon I had a good inspection of all the nursing equipment and the nursing registers. In the late afternoon I had a phone call to visit young Jack Stock. He had been playing football and had a very black eye. I advised his mother about treatment and said I would call in again on Monday. Mrs Stock was a good mother to Mrs Ida Sanderson (nee Winton). Ida died almost two years ago and Jack was at the funeral. I reminded him of that incident of many years ago and he said he remembered it well, and said it was a real corker of an eye. Joan Day
