THE VOICE OF FINDON — MICK OCKENDEN

Copyright Valerie Martin 2004

In July 1987 it was reported that the village of Findon was in mourning.   The village "voice" Mick Ockenden had died.    He was the brother of a friend of mine, Betty (Elizabeth) Ockenden of Nepcote.

The Ockendens had been established in Findon for more than a hundred years.   Arthur John (Mick) Ockenden, aged 65 had been born in Nepcote and subsequently became involved in almost every aspect of Findon life.

He died suddenly at his Nepcote home.  He was a Findon Parish Council member for more than 25 years.   He worked on a range of sub-committees before serving several terms as full Council Chairman.   He was also a member of the village's Photographic circle, Findon Gardens Association and Crime Alert Panel.   He had also been a chorister at St. John the Baptist Church and served as a sidesman.

Mick only left the village for a short period o serve with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers from 1940 to 1945.

He worked for most of his life in the family builders' and timber merchants' business.   For the last twelve years he had been a handyman at the Convent in Nepcote.
