TWO MORE DEW-PONDS

Copyright Valerie Martin 2004

On another sunny July evening in 2002, I found the locations of two further dew-ponds hitherto unknown to me.  When I say the "locations" I literally do mean sites... as the actual dew-ponds have dried up and are almost indistinguishable.

The first was again on a track to the east of Cissbury Ring at O.S. 1590 0855 and I have christened it the Lychpole Bottom Dew-pond site.  It appears as an indentation in the field as if a giant has bounced his football.  Interestingly enough, hidden in the undergrowth nearby on Lychpole Bottom is a pheasant hatchery.

A little further up the same track is the New Hill Barn dew-pond site at O.S. 1595 0900 .... just west of the Steyning road.  This dew-pond is even more indistinct.

Fascinating stuff, I am sure you will agree.  I cannot help but wonder who the dew-pond makers in bygone days in the Findon area were?

The maximum life of the average dew-pond may be a hundred years and time is running out in the Findon area for the surviving dew-ponds.
