FINDON VILLAGE CRICKET WITHIN LIVING MEMORY

A game of cricket in process at the Findon cricket pitch below Church Hill.

The Findon Cricket Club was formed in 1867 — so I am not going quite that far back for memories.

Roger Moulds was a resident to Findon Village a few years ago (more than he would like to remember) and I was delighted when he wrote and gave me his cricket reminiscences of years gone by at the Long Furlong pitch....

Findon Cricket

I remember snippets.

My brother, Brian Moulds used to play for them.  He even had a trial for Sussex Colts.  But then he had trouble with his knees and had to stop playing.

My other brother, Chris also had a few games with them, I played occasionally if they were short but I suffered very badly from hay fever and never played very well.

I remember one occasion when my father Lawrence Moulds played ( they were very very short of players!), early on he dropped a dolly catch and was banished to the boundary for the duration.

In the 1950's Findon had a one-armed umpire, Mr Armstrong.  We always reckoned he was good for one or two lbw decisions if we needed them!

An annual fixture at that time was against the West Indies.  It was a team that came down from the London area.  We even put up a marquee one year on the cricket ground for the event.  They had the most horrendously fast bowlers.  We were not a very good match for them, but we all had a lot of fun.  I was scorer at that time.

I remember the name Jack East.  I can't remember any others, but then I have a job remembering my own name these days!

One of the players introduced a Canadian gentleman to the club.  He had not played cricket before.  I was told that he played ice hockey for Brighton Tigers.  He had such a good eye he did not try defensive play at all, but carted the bowling all over the place.  I think more time was spent looking in the hedges and adjoining fields for the ball than actually playing!

It was also during the fifties that the new club house was built on the uphill side of the green.  However, teas were still served from the hut which had been the original club house, down near The Kennels.

That's all I can remember, but if my memory was jogged, I expect I could recall other items.

I am absolutely thrilled to learn that Findon are in the semi-final.  Brilliant! Wonderful!

Unfortunately I can't be there, as I have to be in Hertford that weekend, but I wish THE TEAM every success and will be thinking of you all on the day.  GOOD LUCK!
Regards
Roger Moulds
