THIS IS FINDON VILLAGE ― These Findon
Chronicles are created by Valerie Martin and are progressively growing to be the
only record of life around Findon, West Sussex, England. Everyday stories about
real people..... in fact, a potted history of the village. The topics today, are
the history of tomorrow.

T his
is an image from a postcard pre 1929 — and
that gives us some idea of the view over the Rogers Farm agricultural land
towards Findon sometime near to that date — the scene is captured from the tall
trees on the horizon of the photograph below.

Another view over Findon from the downland pre 1939.
Rogers Farm land is immediately below. Chanctonbury Ring is clearly seen
on the horizon.

Perhaps this photograph was taken around the same time.....
with a puff of smoke coming out of the chimney. |
I have always found that Rogers Farm lacked documentation
.....but as you can see I have managed to scrape together a few details.

Mike Hinton lives at Stable Cottage at Rogers Farm and the date set in the façade of Mike's
property bears
the initials WWR. These I take to be the initials of William
Westbrook Richardson, the Lord of the Manor of Findon and this indicates that
the property came under the umbrella of the Manor at that time. Huntsmans
House and the Kennels at Long Furlong were also built by the Richardsons at the
same period.
I was interested to learn from Pam Stepney of North
End that there was a chicken farm at Rogers Farm in the 1950s. It
was owned by the Wilkes family of Blossomfield, Bost Hill, who had orchards.
Part was let to a Mr.
Dannet who lived in one of the cottages where Mike now lives, and ran his chicken business.
