TRAVELLERS ON CHURCH HILL — 2002

Church Hill from my garden in 2002 — thankfully, no unsightly views from this angle. |
During the spring and summer of 2002 a conglomeration of vehicles gradually appeared on the horizon on Church Hill above Findon. It was only after a stay of nine weeks the authorities eventually evicted them from the area and the Arun District Council and Worthing Borough Council were left to clear up the mess left behind them.

9th July 2002. Hello Valerie ...... as for the Church Hill camp I will go there tomorrow to see what is going on and to see the state of the place I will try to get a photo or two if I can. But as for you going there, don't go. As for where they get
water I wonder what happens with the waste the other end - don't want
to think of that ok my friend Trev Trevor Wright, Findon Village, West Sussex. |
I told Trev "If you don't come back, I'll send out a search party ... and will most likely find you bound and gagged laying in the back of a derelict bus".
True to his word, Trev e-mail me on the following day —

Hello Valerie Well I made it back safe you all might be pleased to here that they are on the move but I did manage to get some photos. When I got up there there was a lot of moving going on but I found them to be a friendly bunch had a good talk with them but I did ask if I could take a photo or two. Well, the guy with the horse drawn wagon dresses as a woman — a skirt and stockings and suspenders. Says he is not to sure what he wants to be. Please find enclosed photos your Intrepid Trev. The travellers who camped on Church Hill above Findon for two months left behind a legacy of trash... including a burned out 40-seater coach —

The High Salvington Residents' Association has been endeavouring for the last two years to persuade the West Sussex County Council to close off the track leading from the A280 at Long Furlong — the travellers' access to the downland. The Association is now renewing its efforts to call for a closure of the track to prevent this happening ever again.
Trev and his wife, Chris are unfortunately left the village and moved to a flat in East Preston in August 2002 but they faithfully promise to drop into this website regularly and keep up to date with all that is going on in Findon.
