THIS IS FINDON VILLAGE — created by Valerie Martin, contains scenes from her home village of Findon, West Sussex, U.K.
![]() This is the earliest photograph I have been given of the Black Horse Pond and it was taken in 1902. It depicts the Findon postman from 1902 until 1920, Fred Smith. |

Here is another photograph of Fred Smith taken in 1898.... he is the guy holding the whip was well-known to every householder in Findon. The above smart turn out was, in fact, Worthing's first oil delivery wagon. It consisted of just a cylindrical tank mounted on wheels and could conceivably been originally a converted steam engine. On the rear and side of the tank were racks to house the metal oil cans. Written on the side are the following words..."Tea Rose and White Rose. American Lamp Oils. Anglo-American Oil Co. Ltd.
It is hard to believe but I understand there was at one time a pond at the southern end of the Findon High Street. Unfortunately, I am told that this disappeared when the carriageway of the A24 bypass was constructed c. 1939. It is no more than a puddle and now a shadow of its former self and lies hidden behind the hedge on the west side of the main road.

Pre - 1907. The track on the right of the photograph leads to Roger's Farm. |
I have also discovered that the pond was originally called Parson's Pond but gradually became known as Black Horse Pond because of the close proximity of the
Black Horse public house.
