THIS IS FINDON VILLAGE — www.findonvillage.com  created by Valerie Martin, contains scenes from her home village of Findon, West Sussex, U.K.

This is the earliest photograph I have been given of the Black Horse Pond and it was taken in 1902.    I think this must be the Findon postman and his horse.

BLACK HORSE POND

Copyright Valerie Martin 1999.

It is hard to believe but I understand there was at one time a pond at the southern end of the Findon High Street. Unfortunately, I am told that this disappeared when the carriageway of the A24 bypass was constructed c. 1939.   It is no more than a puddle and now a shadow of its former self and lies hidden behind the hedge on the west side of the main road.

Pre 1904 — Black Horse Pond. The horse and wagon are heading up the High Street towards the village centre.

Pre - 1907. The track on the right of the photograph leads to Roger's Farm.

I have also discovered that the pond was originally called Parson's Pond but gradually became known as Black Horse Pond because of the close proximity of the Black Horse public house.

c.1908 — Black Horse Pond with the Black Horse public house in the background. The white building just in front of the pub was a barber's shop.
